Festive Halloween Oreo Balls

4 adorable and festive Halloween Oreo Balls -- monsters, pumpkins, bats, and mummies; each made with 5 ingredients or less! via chelseasmessyapron.com

First up, MONSTER TRUFFLES. These ended up being my favorite, so they get written about first in the line-up! ๐Ÿ™‚

Monsters, Inc. is one of my all-time favorite movies and these little guys definitely remind me of a monster you’d see from that movie! One big eye and some sprinkles on top — these couldn’t be easier to make! I’ve found the large edible eyes at different grocery stores (usually with cake decorating, sprinkles, or general baking aisle). The candy melts and sprinkles are hit or miss at grocery stores, but I’ve always had luck finding them at crafting stores. Also if you are local to SLC area, you can grab the sprinkles for a great deal at Orson Gygi which is one of my favorite places in SLC to find decorating supplies. They’ve got sprinkles of every color you could imagine.

In case you can’t find the ingredients in the store, or prefer the convenience of shopping online, here are links to the ingredients I used:

PUMPKIN OREO BALLS 4 adorable and festive Halloween Oreo Balls -- monsters, pumpkins, bats, and mummies; each made with 5 ingredients or less! via chelseasmessyapron.com

PUMPKIN TRUFFLES. When I first was thinking about doing a post of Halloween truffles, I came up with 8 different ideas. I sent all 8 ideas in a text message to my sisters and had them vote for their top 4. The only one that got all 4 votes was a pumpkin! It definitely surprised me, but they did end up cute so I’m glad they made the cut. ๐Ÿ˜‰

These little guys have pretty standard ingredients that aren’t too hard to find. Pretzels, M&M’s, and orange candy melts. Especially since it’s Halloween time, I’ve seen orange melts at lots of different grocery stores. But, just in case you can’t find the orange melts in the store, or prefer the convenience of shopping online, here is an Amazon link for them:

BAT OREO BALLS 4 adorable and festive Halloween Oreo Balls -- monsters, pumpkins, bats, and mummies; each made with 5 ingredients or less! via chelseasmessyapron.com

These little guys again, have pretty standard ingredients that aren’t too hard to find. In fact, these should be the easiest ๐Ÿ™‚ Regular milk chocolate (or dark or semi-sweet — whatever you like best!) and more oreos for the wings! I suggest using the thin oreos since they hold up better, but if you don’t want to buy two different kinds of oreos, the regular will work okay.

MUMMY OREO BALLS 4 adorable and festive Halloween Oreo Balls -- monsters, pumpkins, bats, and mummies; each made with 5 ingredients or less! via chelseasmessyapron.com

MUMMY TRUFFLES. The idea of mummies to me is super creepy, but they are one of my favorites to make into food. (See here: mummy bark and mummy milanos) These truffles get drenched in white chocolate and then you let them completely dry. After they are dry is when you’ll pipe on extra white chocolate to give the “bandages” more of a defined look. I also like to pipe a little bit of chocolate over the eyes to make them seem more encased in the “mummy”.

Again, in case you can’t find the edible eyes in the store, or prefer the convenience of shopping online, here is an Amazon link for them: Alternatively, you could use 2 mini chocolate chips put in upside down into the truffle!

There are full written recipes for each truffle below. Please note that each recipe is for making an entire batch of ONE type of truffle. If you want to make all four or an assortment then you’ll want to make a regular batch of the Oreo truffles and then scale down the decoration parts to exactly how many of each Oreo truffle you want. The quantity of truffles you get of course depends on the size you roll them out.

SPIDER OREO BALLS via chelseasmessyapron.com

Next up, SPIDER TRUFFLES. These are actually a recipe I shared last year, but they get a spot in the video tutorial this year. ๐Ÿ™‚ The one thing I get asked is where to find black licorice. I’ve always found it in candy aisle with the individually wrapped “gourmet” candies (instead of with regular black and red licorice). I’ve also found it in gas stations (ha!) and if all else fails it’s always somewhere online!

FRANKENSTEIN TRUFFLES.

These guys crack me up — so cute and super easy to make! I used a different green candy melts color, but if you are making the witches at the same time, that green will work great for these.

Again, in case you can’t find the decorations in the store, or prefer the convenience of shopping online, here is an Amazon link for them:

OWL TRUFFLES.

I had a hard time coming up with the last Halloween truffle and as soon as I thought of an owl, I had a blast trying to make it. The big eyes are just miniature oreos pulled apart with an M&M pressed into the center. The beak is also just an M&M! These are probably the easiest ones to make and the ingredients are super simple to find.

Halloween Oreo Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 (14-ounce) package Oreos
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese softened
  • 1 (12-ounce) bag candy melts or chocolate chips
  • Vegetable oil optional

Instructions

  • Pulse the Oreos (including the cream) in a food processor or blender until they become fine crumbs. Using a handheld mixer, beat the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese together until well combined.

I love these simple truffles, and they are always a big hit when I make them. Thank you for the creative spooky theme ideas.I was wondering if you have tried this recipe using the flavored oreos and if so how did they work out for you. I was thinking of using the peanut butter, lemon, vanilla or any of the newer ones on the market. I have used the mint ones to make a melting snowman and they came out great.

I’ve made lots of oreo truffles with different flavors of oreos and they always work out great!! Definitely a fun idea ๐Ÿ™‚

Please share some Christmas idea with Oreo cookies. Thank you.

  3. Joanna says:

Throwing a monster themed baby shower tomorrow. Making these in different colors for the favors. If I put 3 or 4 together in little plastic baggies do you think they Will smudge?

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

I think they might (especially if you’re in a hot area!) I’d recommend serving them in a plate or platter. Sounds like a fun shower!

So happy you liked these! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Rachel says:

I cannot get the candy coating to the right consistency for dipping even with using veg oil. I am using Wilton candy melts and following the directions for microwave melting. Help! I have ugly and naked Oreo balls!

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

Is the chocolate completely melted? Can you give me a little more detail so I can help you out? Make sure the chocolates are totally melted and then add vegetable oil a teaspoon at a time until it thins a bit. It will still seem pretty thick and should be thick. I don’t actually dip the balls in either. Hold an oreo ball on top of a spoon or fork over the bowl of melted chocolate and then using another spoon, spoon the melted chocolate over the ball, and then tap the fork on the side of the bowl. See the video for more help. Good luck!

    2. Rachel says:

Nevermind. It required significantly more than a few drops of oil. FYI to anyone using these candy melts.

      1. chelseamessyapron says:

So glad you figured it out! Yeah all brands of candy melts are different so thanks for the tip with Wilton!

Can you premake truffle part and chill over night?

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

      Yes absolutely! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Jenny says:

How long do these keep? Super fun!

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

Thank you Jenny!! They are best eaten within a week! (Store them in the fridge)

  8. Jane says:

Question: This is my first time trying to make ANYthing like these. I’m having trouble mixing the cookie crumbs and cream cheese together, any suggestions? Thank you

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

Is the cream cheese softened to room temperature and the cookies finely crushed? Try using a stand mixer or hand beaters and that should help the process along ๐Ÿ™‚

I want to ship, these to my grandkids….is this unadvisable since they have the cream cheese in them?

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

Yes and unfortunately I think the chocolate would melt and smudge ๐Ÿ™

  10. Theresa says:

I accidentally bought double stuff. You think that will be ok?

    1. chelseamessyapron says:

You might need a little less cream cheese, but other than that it should be fine ๐Ÿ™‚
