My Favorite BLT Recipe

While BLTs may seem self-explanatory and not necessarily need a recipe, I wanted to share mine anyway.

After years of perfecting my ideal BLT, I have a few tips to share along with my favorite sandwich spread. It’s still super easy to make and adds a great punch of flavor!

All the ingredients in this recipe including bread, sour cream, butter, mustard, mayo, tomato, bacon, avocado, and lettuce prepped out for easy assembly.

Ingredients

  • Bread: I love country white or sourdough best. Get thick, sturdy slices—they need to hold up a lot!
  • Butter: Use soft, room-temperature butter for easy and quick spreading.
  • Bacon: Bake bacon on a wire rack for even cooking and easy cleanup.
  • Lettuce: Green leaf lettuce is my go-to.
  • Tomato: Use ripe, firm tomatoes. Heirloom or vine-ripened are best. If the tomato slices are super juicy, set them on a paper towel to drain a bit before adding to the BLT.
  • Avocado: Should be slightly soft to the touch, like pressing the tip of your nose. A perfectly ripe avocado adds amazing creaminess.
  • Salt and Pepper: Sprinkle a little salt on tomatoes and pepper on avocado for extra flavor. You don’t need much since bacon is quite salty!

Sandwich Spread

  • Mayo: Use a high-quality brand like Best Foods/Hellman’s.
  • Mustard: Yellow mustard adds a nice tang and flavor.
  • Sour Cream: Adds a bit of creaminess and helps balance the flavors.

How to Make The BEST BLT Sandwich

  1. Make Sauce: Mix mayo, sour cream, and mustard with a pinch of salt and pepper. Chill until needed.
  2. Cook Bacon: Bake on a wire rack until crispy. Drain on paper towels and tear into halves.
  3. Toast Bread: Lightly toast and spread with butter.
  4. Assemble Sandwich:
    1. Spread sauce on one side of each slice of bread.
    2. Layer lettuce, tomato slices (sprinkle with salt), bacon halves, and avocado slices (sprinkle with pepper).
    3. Top with the second slice of bread.
  5. Serve: Cut sandwich in half with a sharp serrated knife and enjoy immediately.

What to Serve Alongside a BLT:

  • Chips: Your favorite chips — potato, sweet potato, whatever!
  • Sweet Potato Fries: Or these delicious roasted sweet potatoes.
  • Pasta Salad: This easy pasta salad is always a hit!
  • Pickles: Their tanginess complements the sandwich well.
  • Fruit Salad: I love a side of whatever fruit is in season and if I have a bunch, I whip up this fruit salad.

FAQs for BLT Sandwich

The best bread for a BLT is dense and holds up well after toasting. A good sliced country white bread or sourdough is perfect.

What is the best lettuce for a BLT?

Big, leafy greens like romaine, Bibb, or green leaf lettuce are great for BLTs.

Is a BLT healthy?

A BLT can be nutritious. Bacon provides protein, vegetables offer various nutrients, and bread contains both protein and additional nutrients. For more protein, consider turning this BLT to a BELT by adding a fried egg!

Recipe Notes

Note 1: I love a good heirloom tomato best! If the slices are juicy, let them stand on a paper towel to slightly drain before adding them to the sandwich.
Storage: This sandwich will not store well, it's best to keep ingredients separate until you're ready to eat.
