This Everything Bagel Seasoning is one of our all-time favorite seasoning blends — flavorsome, crackly-crunchy, and garlicky! The applications for this seasoning are nearly endless — obviously, you can add it atop homemade bagels, but it also goes great on eggs, avocado toast, or sprinkled into your favorite chicken breading!

What Is Everything Bagel Seasoning?

Everything Bagel Seasoning (also known as Everything But the Bagel Seasoning) is a favorite seasoning blend created by David Gussin around 1980. According to Gussin, he came up with the idea after he was sweeping up leftover bagel toppings from the oven.

And today you can find this seasoning blend at many grocery stores or even on Amazon. So, you may be asking why make your own? I love making my own seasoning blends for a couple of reasons:

  1. It’s economical. Buying spices in bulk and quickly assembling them into a spice blend is far cheaper than buying a packaged spice blend. You’re paying a premium for someone else to mix it for you!
  2. You can customize it to your preference. Everyone has different taste preferences and in a blend like this one, it’s simple to emphasize some flavors over others. Amp up the amounts of your favorite spices and go lighter on others you’re less fond of. Taste, adjust, and repeat!

What Is In Everything Bagel Seasoning?

  • Sesame seeds. We use a combination of white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds. The nutty flavor is the perfect complement to the dried onion, garlic, and salt. If you aren’t able to find both varieties, just use just white sesame seeds.
  • Poppyseeds. These add color, flavor, and a nice crunch!
  • Dried minced garlic. Garlic adds a deeply savory, garlicky flavor.
  • Dried minced onion. This adds a sharp, sweet, and savory onion flavor.
  • Sea salt flakes. Some blends use coarse sea salt which I find a bit overpowering. The sea salt flakes make the other flavors pop nicely without being too intense.

Quick Tip

Not all salts contain the same amount of sodium, so if you aren’t using the sea salt flakes, or you are sensitive to salt, you may want less salt. Add slowly and to taste. If you’ll be adding this seasoning mix to things that are already salted (like a bagel made with salt), you may want to reduce the amount of salt in the blend.

How To Make Everything Bagel Seasoning

Making your own seasoning blend is as simple as measuring out the individual spices/seasonings and mixing them together.

Quick Tip

The smaller spices have a tendency to fall to the bottom, be sure to give your blend a good shake or stir each time before using it.

Where To Buy Everything Bagel Seasoning

If you aren’t able to find the individual spices at your local grocery store to make this seasoning blend, I’d recommend purchasing them on Amazon. You can usually find the packaged seasoning blend at major grocery stores.

How Long Does Everything Bagel Seasoning Last?

  • Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dark/dry place (like a cabinet or pantry). I like to make a big batch to store in a jar or spice containers.
  • As long as it is stored properly, this homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning can last 6 months.

Everything Bagel Seasoning

This Everything Bagel Seasoning is one of our all-time favorite seasoning blends -- flavorsome, crackly-crunchy, and garlicky! The applications for this seasoning are nearly endless -- obviously, you can add it atop homemade bagels, but it also goes great on eggs, avocado toast, or sprinkled into your favorite chicken breading!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Optional: Toasting Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4 tablespoons

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons white sesame seeds
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons dried minced garlic
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons black sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes (We love Maldon -- Note 1)

Instructions

  • MIX: (Read Note 1). Measure out all the spices and stir them together in a small bowl. Toast (optional -- see next step), transfer to a storage container, or add directly to the dish you're preparing.
  • (OPTIONAL) TOAST: If you'd like to boost the flavor, you can toast the seasonings. (Don't toast if you'll be adding this blend to something that will get baked; if you bake toasted seasonings they'll burn).
To toast, add the seasoning blend to a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Stir near constantly for 3-5 minutes or until seasonings are fragrant and white sesame seeds are turning barely golden. Watch closely-- the seasonings can go from perfectly toasted to burnt in a matter of seconds! Remove from heat, immediately pour from the skillet into a bowl, and let fully cool before adding to a storage container.
  • USE: Before using, shake the seasoning up -- the smaller spices have a tendency to fall to the bottom. Top whatever you'd like with the seasoning blend and enjoy!
  • STORAGE: Store the leftovers or full blend in an airtight container in a cool, dark place (like a cabinet or pantry). I like to store in small plastic bags or make a larger batch to store in a jar or spice containers (we love these!) As long as it is stored properly, Everything Bagel Seasoning can last 6 months up to a year.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Salt: Not all salts contain the same amount of sodium, so if you aren't using the sea salt flakes, or you are sensitive to salt, you may want less salt. Add slowly and to taste. If you'll be adding this seasoning mix to things that are already salted (like a bagel made with salt), you'll want to reduce the amount of salt in the blend.
