Ham and Cheese Sliders

Over the years, I’ve shared various slider recipes, but the ones I make most frequently are these Ham and Cheese Sliders and these French Dip Sliders. It’s high time I shared this particular recipe with you!

These mini sandwiches are not only insanely easy to create but also make the ultimate game day treat. With the Super Bowl on the horizon and February nearly upon us, these sliders are a must-add to your game-day menu.

I’ve included step-by-step photos that basically lay out the whole recipe visually, reaffirming just how EASY this is!

The rolls, cheese, and meat being layered into the pan.

Ingredients In Ham And Cheese Sliders

  • Sweet Hawaiian rolls: Soft and slightly sweet base. Use a serrated knife to cut rolls evenly.
  • Cooked deli ham: Adds savory flavor. Ask the deli for thinly sliced ham for even layers.
  • Swiss cheese: Use pre-sliced cheese for easy layering.
  • Unsalted butter: Base for the topping. Let melted butter cool slightly before mixing.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Adds tangy, savory depth. Measure beforehand for easy mixing.
  • Dijon mustard: Gives a tangy kick. Whisk well into the butter.
  • Poppy seeds: Sprinkle a few extra on top for crunch.
  • Dried minced onion: Mild onion flavor. Crush slightly to release more flavor.
Adding the top layer of rolls to the dish, then the butter topping being spread on top and it all being baked.

How To Make Ham And Cheese Sliders

  1. Separate the rolls. Using a sharp, serrated knife, slice the rolls in half so you have a top and bottom — you want the bottom slightly thicker than the top. Don’t separate individual rolls–right now, you want them all in a sheet.
  2. Add cheese and meat. Put down a layer of cheese, a layer of ham, and another layer of cheese. Top with the other half of the rolls right back on top.
  3. Make buttery topping. Melt some butter + a few seasonings + Dijon mustard in a bowl. Whisk together and pour over the rolls.
  4. Bake. Cover the rolls and bake! Slice ’em up and enjoy these hot ham and cheese sandwiches straight out of the oven!

What To Serve With Sliders

You can serve these sliders as an appetizer, and they also make a great meal. Kids particularly enjoy the smaller size!  Here are some of our favorite side dishes to pair with these sandwiches.

Storage

Can you freeze Ham and Cheese Sliders?

Yes, you can! Here’s how:

  1. Assemble: Prepare sliders but don’t bake; include ham, cheese, and topping.
  2. Freeze: Place unbaked sliders on a tray, freeze briefly, then transfer to a freezer bag or wrap well in foil and plastic.
  3. Bake from frozen: Bake directly from the freezer, allowing extra time for them to heat through.

How do you store sliders?

  • Cool: Let cooked sliders reach room temperature. Place in an airtight container or wrap tightly in foil or plastic wrap. Store for 1-2 days in the fridge.

Ham and Cheese Sliders

Ham and Cheese Sliders are buttery and delicious, with sweet Hawaiian rolls, deli ham or holiday leftovers, Swiss cheese, and a seasoned buttery topping.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: 12 sliders

Ingredients

  • 1 package (12 rolls total) sweet Hawaiian rolls
  • ¾ pound cooked deli ham, thinly sliced (I use honey ham or black forest ham)
  • 1 package (12 ounces) Swiss cheese, sliced
  • ½ cup (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • ½ tablespoon dried minced onion
  • salt and pepper, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Using a sharp serrated knife, slice the rolls in half (see pictures in post) while keeping individual rolls intact. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared pan.
  • Add half of the cheese in an even layer on top of the rolls. Next, add an even layer of ham. Top with the remaining cheese in an even layer on top. Finish with the top half of the rolls.
  • Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Set aside to slightly cool. Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, minced onion, and salt and pepper to taste. (I add a good pinch of each)
  • Slowly pour the butter mixture over the rolls. Use a pastry brush or spatula to evenly spread the mixture over the tops. Some of the mixture will pool at the bottom of the rolls which you want to make the bottoms crispy! You don't need to use all the butter mixture– I usually use just over ¾ of it.
  • Cover the rolls with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and (watching closely) bake for another 3-5 minutes or until tops are slightly crispy and cheese is melty.
  • Serve these sliders straight out of the oven!

This is fantastic, Iโ€™ve made it several times. This last time I didnโ€™t have poppy seeds so I substituted everything bagel mix, turned out equally delicious.

They were delicious! We have leftovers and I am very happy about that! I thought our crowd would eat more so I had made a triple batch. And I used ham that we had left from our Christmas dinner.

    1. Chelsea Lords says:

This is my favorite way to use leftover ham! So happy they were a hit! Thanks Elaine! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Lorie says:

Making these tonight but I donโ€™t have dried minced onion. I do have an actual onion and onion powder. Will that work? If so, how much do you recommend I add?

I’ve made these a LOT OF TIMES! I like to cut rolls as you describe but also cut across both ways (makes them far easier to extract). Remove tops in order – add a little seeded mustard then ham. I use whole sliced ham – cut into squares to fit individual roll – 2 squares per roll. I cut sliced cheese, swiss and cheddar, into 4 squares – 2 squares per roll. Add little Dijon mustard and replace top. My topping is same as yours. I call these Bronco Rolls and folks LOVE them. Thanks for getting me started!

  6. Ash says:

Would these be okay to make and take about half an hour for a picnic? Or would they be soggy before then?

    1. Chelsea Lords says:

Hmm, I think they’d be a bit soggy. These are best pretty fresh out of the oven!

Iโ€™m a little late to the comments here, but I bet you could make the sandwich portion ahead of time (cover and refrigerate) and then just add the sauce and bake when youโ€™re ready? Iโ€™m snowshoeing with friends today and plan to bring with me, then when weโ€™re done, heat the sauce there and bake and serve there… hope it works!

I prepared the FrenchDip Sliders in advance then put sauce on when I was ready to bake, excellent!
