This Oreo Milkshake is bursting with the sweet, creamy flavor of cookies and cream ice cream dotted with rich, chocolatey cookie bits. A dash of vanilla and a hint of salt elevate the sweetness and the creaminess, creating the perfect balance in this thick, indulgent shake.
How To Make The Best Oreo Milkshake
Our “secret” to the ultimate Oreo Milkshake? We don’t use actual Oreos! Instead, we opt fr high-quoality cookies-and-cream ice cream to capture the perfect Oreo flavor. Every time I’ve used Oreos in a milkshake, the taste just doesn’t come out right. Another trick up our sleeve? Use a minimum amount of milk! This gives you a super-thick shake, reminiscent of those straight out of a nostalgic malt shop! A dash of vanilla and a tiny pinch of salt are the final touches to highlight the flavors. It may sound too easy or too good to be true, but trust me, this is the creamiest, thickest milkshake you’ll ever enjoy!
Bear in mind that a high-powered blender is crucial for this recipe. It’s needed to thoroughly break down the ingredients and achieve that dreamy, thick consistency.
Use a High-Powered Blender
The blender makes a huge difference in the outcome of your milkshake. High-powered blenders are more capable of crushing ice cream and mixing it with milk to achieve a thick, creamy texture without overheating or struggling. Brands like Blendtec® and Vitamix® are excellent choices.
Quick Tip
If you’re working with a standard blender, it might require a little extra attention. You may need to frequently stop the blender and manually stir the ice cream to ensure even blending. Also, the need for additional milk may arise to facilitate easier blending and prevent the blender from overworking.
Oreo Milkshake Ingredients
- Cookies-and-cream ice cream: Choose a high-quality brand for the best flavor; it should have a rich, creamy flavor with plenty of cookie bits throughout. That gives the milkshake its distinctive Oreo taste without needing to add actual Oreo cookies. Our favorite? Tillamook® (not sponsored) and taste tester’s agree giving it a 10/10!
- Whole milk: Choose whole milk to add creaminess without diluting the flavor. It’s important to use just enough to get the milkshake blending without making it watery. Start with a small amount and add more as needed if you’d like it thinner.
- Vanilla extract: Go for pure vanilla extract rather than imitation vanilla. It might seem like a small detail, but the depth of flavor from real vanilla makes a difference. It adds a lovely warmth and subtle sweetness that enhances the overall flavor of the milkshake.
- Fine sea salt: Even a pinch can do wonders in a sweet dish. Sea salt helps to balance the sweetness and bring out the other flavors. While you won’t taste the salt itself, it will subtly enhance the overall flavor profile.
Note: We respect trademarks and the companies they represent. In this post, we’ve mentioned Oreos, Tillamook, Blendtek and Vitamix. These are all proprietary product names that we use because we’ve had experience with these products and can highly recommend them.
Oreo Milkshake Toppings (Optional)
Toppings are a great way to take your Oreo shake to the next level and add some extra flavor and texture. Here are some toppings to try:
- Whipped cream: A dollop of whipped cream on top of your milkshake adds a light and fluffy texture and a wonderful creaminess. Plus, it looks extra special that way! Here’s a guide on how to make your own whipped topping.
- Crushed cookies: A crushed-up Oreo adds a nice crunchy texture to the top of your shake. Simply break it up with your fingers right on top of the shake before serving for added flavor and texture.
How To Make An Oreo Milkshake (Tips)
Here are a few tips to help you make the best Oreo Milkshake:
- Chill the glasses before serving: For an extra frosty milkshake, chill your glass(es) in the freezer for a few minutes before serving. This will help keep the shake cold.
- Start cold: Make sure the ice cream is thoroughly frozen before you start. This ensures your milkshake will be as thick as possible.
- Avoid over-blending: Over-blending can lead to your ice cream turning too soft and the milkshake becoming watery. To prevent this, aim to blend the milkshake only until it reaches a smooth and creamy texture. If required, pause the blender to stir or press down the ice cream before resuming the blending process.
- Monitor the consistency: Keep an eye on the consistency as you blend. If it’s too thick to pour, add a little more milk. If it’s too thin, add more ice cream.
- Serve immediately: To maintain the thick consistency, serve your milkshake as soon as it’s ready. The longer it sits, the more it will melt.
Remember, the ultimate goal is a thick, creamy, and flavorful milkshake. With these tips and a little patience, you should be able to make a milkshake good enough to rival the best milkshake shop!
Storage
The best way to enjoy your Oreo Milkshake is to drink it fresh, right after blending. This ensures you experience its smooth, creamy consistency at its best. If you need to store it for later, it can be kept in the freezer briefly. However, be aware that freezing will alter the texture somewhat. So, for the optimal milkshake experience, it’s recommended to consume it promptly after preparation.
Quick Tip
To achieve this level of thickness, it’s important to use a high-powered blender. Standard kitchen blenders might struggle to get the consistency just right, but brands like Blendtec® and Vitamix® are perfectly suited for this delicious task.
